The goal of awareness and education is ACTION. Effective action to prevent trafficking in persons requires a comprehensive approach, including measures to prevent trafficking, to protect victims of such trafficking and to prosecute traffickers. The root causes of trafficking are multifaceted, which means organizations that deal with helping and empowering vulnerable individuals, who are at a much greater risk of being exploited by others, can be considered prevention agencies.

Called to Rescue

Outreach Prevention Shelter

Dr. Cyndi Romine started Called to Rescue in 1992 after she witnessed, first-hand, the horror of sex trafficking during a trip overseas. Their mission is to prevent the abduction of children into the sex trafficking behemoth through training, safe houses, and education, as well as the rescue of those already held prisoners, by all means available.

Department of Human Services: State of Oregon Foster and Adoptive Parenting

Prevention

Child victims of abuse and neglect are often more vulnerable to being re-victimized, making children residing in foster care more at risk of being sexually exploited by others. There are over 8,000 Oregon kids living in foster care today. At times, foster children run away and are often picked up by law enforcement, if found. As a runaway, a child’s vulnerability increases to outside dangers such exposure to the outside elements, unstable housing, such as having to trade sexual favors for food, shelter, protection, drugs and/or money, etc.

ECPAT’s mandate is to end the sexual exploitation of children through prostitution; trafficking; online and in the travel and tourism sector. We advocate for change with governments and the international community, work to better understand the problem through research and prioritize the needs of child victims and survivors.

Awareness Prevention

GirlStrength is a self-defense program offered through the Portland Police Bureau for girls, 10-17 years of age. GirlStrength is a free, comprehensive, self-defense course that focuses on empowering girls and demystifying fear while also teaching verbal assertiveness and physical self-defense skills.
