Kell’s Series: Who’s Your Boss?

rsz_kells.jpg

If a business hires a person to stand along side the road at their construction site, is the flagger in business for her/himself? If a company can fire a worker without warning, is the worker really an independent contractor? Is a strip club still a strip club without exotic dancers on their payroll, and who is responsible for making sure they are adults and not minors? And when does it cross into trafficking?

Unemployment benefits, health care, taxes, overtime pay, worker’s compensation – all of these are significantly different if you’re classified as an independent contractor, rather than an employee. Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian will speak about these questions. OLCC Portland Regional Manager, Shannon Hoffeditz, will inform us about regulations on strip clubs. Northwest Workers’ Justice Project Attorney Bonnie Allen-Sailer and Attorney Lake Perriguey will also speak about their concerns.

Free and open to the public. All ages welcome. Meet, greet, and eat 5:30, Program 6 PM. Sponsored by FAST, City Club of Portland, Wyden’s Office, Commissioners McKeel, Smith and Saltzman, Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian, and State Reps. Brent Barton and Deborah Boone
