Adorned In Grace Design Studio

November Update

In September, the Adorned in Grace Design Studio began a weekly after-school workshop for girls. In the past year, Adorned in Grace has held a number of special events that have attracted more than 50 girls, and these workshops, in addition to newly established monthly, all-day workshops, give these girls another place to go for guidance, mentorship, and a chance to creatively express themselves.

Connect PDX

Chelan shares her experience and connects with others, at the 2 day Collective Impact workshop

As a freedom fighter in Portland, I’ve felt like a lone ranger. My group, Stop Child Trafficking Now (SCTNow), has many partners, but none I considered true allies here in Portland…until recently. Many share the common goal of eliminating the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC). I never considered how I could truly partner with any of them until Connect PDX was formed.  Dione Katelhut of the Junior League of Portland made sure I was invited, and what an honor it was. Over 70 organizations gathered to do exactly what was intended: CONNECT.

Cheyenne and me: The true story of children lost in a world of abuse and trafficking

For many of us, the life that we lead falls short of our dreams for things that could be, but for many the dream of holding a loved one just one more time trumps all others.

According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, in the United States 800,000 children are reported missing each year, an average of 2000 per day.

Included in this number are 58,000 children taken by non-family members whose intent is sexual exploitation and vandalizing the innocence of a child.

SCTNow: Stopping the Demand...One Step at a Time

On September 22nd, Portlanders will take to the streets to stand against human trafficking.

“Pornland, Oregon: Child Prostitution in Portland” proclaims the headline to Dan Rather’s report, detailing months of research into child prostitution,  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dan-rather/pornland-oregon-child-pro_b_580035.html. Rather describes scenarios individuals, safely wandering the internet or reading through a newspaper, would view with skepticism or perhaps completely ignore in favor of news about a Hollywood scandal or political hopeful.  The article defines the financial benefits and moral depravity involved in child trafficking and how it occurs in the very communities where most people want to relocate.

My Story: "Innocence Lost"

The sins of the father…

When I was very young, my father stole my innocence, causing me to live in a world of darkness, loneliness and despair. I do not recall a time when I was not sexually abused. My father repeatedly violated me. Others also abused me, including a friend’s uncle. A great step-grandfather would not keep his hands off me as I unknowingly tried to sit on his lap. A neighbor boy lured me into his house, pulled out a knife, blindfolded me and proceeded to molest me on his kitchen counter.

Changing Directions: Up the Downward Spiral

A look into M25 Ventures

How can ex-felons and ex-addicts stay clean? What will help them move forward in life? Is there any program that can make a difference? John Shepherd, founder and president of M25 Ventures, believes these captives can be set free, even when our society wants to keep them chained down. The answer, for him, is found in building God-honoring, productive lives.

Boldly Coming Before His Throne

Betty's heart and transformation through working with Door To Grace. Now she encourages us to pray.

Chuck Swindoll said:

In vain I have searched the Bible, looking for examples of early believers whose lives were marked by rigidity, predictability, inhibition, dullness and caution. Fortunately, grim, frowning, joyless saints in Scriptures are conspicuous by their absence. Instead, the examples I find are of adventurous, risk-taking, enthusiastic and authentic believers, whose joy was contagious, even in times of full trial. Their vision was broad, even when death drew near. Rules were few and changes were welcome. The contrast between then and now is staggering.

Flight to Recovery

A true story of rescue, love and hope.

First, thank you to each and every person who took the time to pray through this time of rescuing this young woman, enslaved in the sex industry. It could not have been done without each one of you and I am so grateful for the outpouring of love.

Night Ride II

What about the johns and pimps? Where are the active neighborhoods?

What about a john/a purchaser of sexual favors?  When caught, they are normally cited. If they are first time offenders, they can choose to attend “john school” to remove the citation from their record. “John school” has been designed by the officers in the sex tracking unit. In this seminar, speakers explain to the johns that the girls are being trafficked. Because they create the demand, the johns are part of the problem. If there were no demand, the problem would go away.  For further investigation, see how Sweden has all but eliminated “sex for hire” by penalizing the purchasers of sexual favors.

Night Ride

Opening our eyes to protect trafficked victims.

After spending a night in a squad car, observing Portland police officers assigned to the sex trafficking division, I became more acutely aware of the plight of sex slaves, especially those below 18 years old. Because of this experience, I feel compelled to present my own perspective on this blight in our community.

Before venturing out into the icy, night air, we pore over that day’s Internet ads from two well-known sites. Girls trapped in this lifestyle are forced by their pimps to advertise themselves in explicit, pornographic poses to sell their “wares” to potential customers...

When Status Quo Isn't Good Enough

I drive down the street, less than five miles from my home, staring off into space. As usual, I am thinking about an upcoming meeting while trying to pay attention to the road, of course. On this exact day, I notice a small, black and purple building, located just off the sidewalk.

Due to its blacked out windows and bright paint job, it doesn’t take me more than a second to recognize that place as a strip club. Sadly, there are so many in my neighborhood that one has to wonder...

Shelly's Story

From Runaway to Redemption

Before her 10th birthday, Shelly’s happy family was ripped apart by her father’s affair.

The shockwaves of the resulting divorce left her mother so paralyzed, that Shelly became caretaker – cooking and cleaning for four younger siblings. While her mother withdrew into her own emotionally tortured world, Shelly was left with what most every kid thinks they want …no rules or boundaries. By age 12, she began spending her time hanging out with friends, often drinking till late into the night; hoping to wash away her unwelcome responsibilities at home....
